Avadhoot Gawali

I started with a cable in my hand. Now I design the systems a manufacturer runs on.

I'm an instrumentation and control engineer who has worked every layer of how a factory runs — the wiring, the control systems, the plant software, and the enterprise systems, data and cloud above them. Today I'm AI and Digital Strategy Executive at Completion Products, based in Abu Dhabi. What I bring is the connection between those layers: I have stood where the instrument is wired, and I understand the decision it ends up informing.

Evidence, on the record.

    The floor

    Commissioning, a brownfield brewery

My career began with a cable drum, not a keyboard. On a working brewery floor I ran cable from the control panels out to every instrument — trunking, glanding, lugging, terminating and landing each core — beside tradesmen who had done it for decades. The same year, as a student, I built a PLC and SCADA inventory system that came first runner-up in an industrial IoT competition. Between the two I learned the thing I have never unlearned: every screen in a control room ends at a wire someone pulled by hand.

Then I learned to make the plant think. I built control logic, SCADA and HMI for pharmaceutical, life-sciences and food plants — Rockwell and Siemens PLCs, FactoryTalk, drives, historians — and followed each system the whole way: panel inspection, factory acceptance, installation, and commissioning on site with the plant waiting to run. In pharma I delivered work validated to the US FDA's electronic-records rule, 21 CFR Part 11, with the full set of lifecycle documents behind it: URS, FDS, IQ, OQ. Regulated plants taught me that if it isn't documented and proven, it isn't done.

    Systems

Emerson Export Engineering Centre · System engineer · Pune

At Emerson the problem turned around: the systems already existed, and nobody fully understood them any more. Working from Pune for plants abroad, I reverse-engineered legacy control systems — older PLCs, and one chemical company's home-grown system — and designed their migration onto Emerson's DeltaV DCS. It was detective work: reading logic nobody had documented, finding out what the plant actually depended on, and carrying that knowledge safely into the new system.

    Operations

Yash Technologies · IoT and MES · Pune

I wanted to know what happens to machine data after the control room. At Yash I was responsible for the IoT and factory-automation work in the IoT and MES practice: sitting with clients to understand what they needed, building proofs of concept on Ignition and Python, handing knowledge across the team, and steering ideas towards product. It moved me from controlling equipment to making production information useful to the people running the operation. Across 2022 and 2023 I also published two papers on control engineering with IEEE.

    Enterprise to strategy

Completion Products · Abu Dhabi, with operations in Singapore, Indonesia and India

I joined a manufacturer of oil and gas completion equipment to build shop-floor systems. Within months the work had climbed off the factory floor and onto the company's side of its ERP — mapping how information really moved, and redesigning processes with the people who own them. I walked the sites before redrawing a single process, and wrote requirements rather than accept thin ones. I built tools people use every day, and brought colleagues in every department into building their own. The remit now spans enterprise systems, data, cloud, security and AI. As AI and Digital Strategy Executive, I shape how a four-country manufacturer uses technology — and I still start by going to look.

Eight years of climbing the technology stack left one layer I had never been handed: strategy, finance and general management. So I went after it.

How I work.

You cannot digitise a process you have not seen.
Before I change how something works, I go and see how it actually runs — on site, with the people who do it.
If you cannot specify it, do not blame the vendor.
A vague requirement is the buyer's problem. I write requirements precise enough to build against and test against.
Understanding comes before building.
The one rule behind the other two.
